[img_assist|nid=877|title=Third Day Onstage|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=199|height=150]Perhaps I should have paid more attention to the promo material that came with my copy of Third Day’s Live Revelations: On Stage, Off Stage, Backstage, a CD/DVD combination that was released on April 7th. To be honest, my initial response was this is just another record label tactic to make more money. I mean, how many of Third Day’s albums include live recordings? Are they going to continue a pattern to release a studio project one year, then a live disc the next?
Despite my thoughts, I am still a fan of Third Day, and I had every intention of fulfilling my tradition to buy each album on the day of release. Unfortunately, my trip to three stores on April 7th left me empty-handed. The tradition held since the 1997, I am here to declare, has ended. Perhaps my attitude toward this recent release affected my lack of tenacity to find a copy. Years ago I would have not stopped until the disc was in hand.
Though I did have a copy of the CD on my desk several days before the release, I did not pay that much attention to it until late last night. When I hit the second to last track, my ears perked up. “Wow! I didn’t know this song was on here!!!” One of my favorite songs of last years Music Builds tour featured Third Day sharing the stage with Jars of Clay, Switchfoot, and Robert Randolph & The Family Band for a cover of the U2/B.B. King classic, “When Love Comes to Town.” It was amazing!
So today I listened to the entire disc again, and remembered that live CD’s from so[img_assist|nid=879|title=Mac Powell and Jon Foreman|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=192|height=145]me of my favorite bands are not always such a bad thing. And when I got to track 8, I was swept back to the live setting, where my jaw dropped each time I heard the U2/B.B. King cover. And I put the song on repeat. I could not get enough! And I thought, “Why didn’t I pay more attention to this disc sooner?” Later on in the day, I began to wonder what it was like for all four bands as they originally put the song together. Having hung out in one way shape or form with three of the four bands, I can only imagine what it was like.
Tonight I watched a bit of the DVD material, which provides an “all access” pass of sorts and helps watchers get to know Third Day better, and also a better understanding of life on the road. For those of you who haven’t had the privilege I have had to see experience life off stage and backstage, it is worth the purchase.
